1.cooking spray does nothing 2.you dont have to put it in cold water if it is not coming out stick it in the freezer for 5 min. try to avoid it tho it will make the wax brittle

Just a thought : It might be easier to tie a slip knot, like the one used in crocheting, to tighten the wick, just as the yarn tightens on a crochet hook, with a little tug, the wick would do the same on the skewer.
